The Mindset Shift of Light Over Darkness

By Shana Strange- Williams

Listen—if you’ve been walking around feeling heavy, overwhelmed, or like everything is getting darker by the day, I want to remind you: you weren’t made for darkness. You were made for the light.

I’ve been struggling with this too. It’s been months of feeling the weight of what’s going on in the world—natural disasters, wars escalating, chaos everywhere. It’s easy to get caught up in it. I’m highly sensitive, so I feel things deeply, and if I’m not careful, that darkness starts to suffocate me.

But here’s what the Lord has been reminding me:

Stop staring at the darkness. Turn your face to the light.

Fix Your Mindset First

I say this all the time, but breakthrough begins when you fix your broken mindset. You can try to grind it out, hustle, or accomplish big goals thinking it’ll change everything—but if your mindset isn’t right, nothing sticks.

God can only take you as far as your mindset will go. That’s why He’ll spend years trying to heal and shift it if we let Him.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to wander around stuck like the Israelites, dying in the wilderness because I refuse to shift my mind.

Light Over Darkness—It’s a Choice

I realized I was feeding my own darkness. Waking up early, drinking coffee, and what was I doing? Jumping straight into the news or scrolling on YouTube. Starting my day with darkness. No wonder I was frustrated, angry, and just plain heavy.

And I know I’m not the only one. I’ve talked to believers who are watching stuff that would absolutely wreck me spiritually—and I’m not judging, but I know my limits. The Holy Spirit convicts me quick, like, “Hey, you don’t need to watch that. That’s not for you.”

When I started to feel that conviction, I knew—I was staring too long at the dark. And God was saying:
Stop. Look at the light.

He IS the Light

1 John 1:5 says:

“God is light, and in Him there is absolutely no darkness at all.”

That means when we walk with Him, when we’re in His Word, when we turn our face to Him—darkness has to flee. It can’t overcome the light.

That doesn’t mean ignoring what’s happening in the world. I’m not saying stick your head in the sand. Be aware—but don’t let the news become your meditation.

We have to spend more time in the light than in the dark. More time in His Word than on social media. More time worshipping than worrying.

Your Word is My Lamp

Psalm 119:105 says:

“Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path.”

If you’re feeling lost or unsure where to go next—His Word will light up your path. But you’ve got to get in it. Not a two-minute devotional and done. I mean really eat the Word. Dig around in it. Let it feed you.

When I do that, the confusion, frustration, heaviness—it melts away. I’m face to face with my Creator again, and everything else feels small.

Turn Your Face Toward Him

If you’ve been drowning in the weight of the world, if you feel numb or frustrated or disconnected—I’m here to tell you: turn your face back to the light.

Come back to His presence. Let His Word wash over you.

You’ll feel lighter.
You’ll breathe again.
You’ll feel joy and peace again.

You were made for the light—not the dark.

Let me leave you with this:

“The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” —John 1:5

The darkness will not overcome you either.

But you’ve got to stay in the light.
