How to Shift the Atmosphere in Your Home

There are seasons in life that just feel long.

Heavy.
Drawn out.
Like you’re just trying to make it through.

And if I’m being honest, that’s where I found myself.

For a while, life had become about survival. Just trying to keep up. Trying to make things work. Trying to carry the weight of everything all at once. And when you live like that long enough, something starts to shift—but not in a good way.

You don’t pray like you used to.
You don’t connect with God like you used to.
You’re still a believer… but you’re tired.

And slowly, without even realizing it, the life starts to drain out of things.

When Life Becomes About Survival

We had gone through a really hard season. Financial pressure. Constant stress. Just trying to make things work. It felt like everything was about the grind. More hours. More effort. More trying to figure out how to make it all come together.

And after a while, that kind of living pulls you out of what actually matters.

Because the truth is, we weren’t created just to survive. We were created to be with Him. To know Him. To walk with Him. To be loved by Him.

But the cares of life have a way of choking that out if we’re not careful.

Jesus talks about this in Matthew 13:22:

“The cares of this world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.”

That’s exactly what happens.

God plants something in your heart—peace, joy, strength, hope—but then the stress and pressure and distractions start choking it before it ever has a chance to grow.

And if I’m honest, that’s where I was.

Even a few months ago, I was in survival mode. Was I still a Christian? Yes. Was I still trying to pray and read my Bible sometimes? Yes.

But I was worn down. I was numb. And when you feel like that, you stop abiding.

When You Stop Abiding, Everything Feels Off

Jesus said in John 15:4–5:

“Abide in me, and I in you… apart from me you can do nothing.”

That’s not just a nice verse. That’s real.

Apart from Him, things dry up.

Your peace dries up.
Your joy dries up.
Your clarity dries up.

Everything starts to feel… off.

That’s what had happened in our home.

We weren’t intentionally running from God. We had just gotten so consumed with life that we drifted from the main thing.

The Small Shift That Changed Everything

One morning, out of nowhere, I woke up and said to my husband,

“Can we pray together?”

That was it.

No big moment. No dramatic breakthrough. Just a small yes.

We were sitting there drinking coffee, and we started reading together. Talking about what we read. Praying together when we were home together.

Simple. Consistent. Intentional.

And I’m telling you… it changed everything.

What Actually Shifted

The atmosphere in our home shifted.

Not because we did something big—but because we invited God back into the center.

We became more aware. More sensitive. More discerning.

We could feel when something was off. We could sense heaviness that didn’t belong. We became more aware of what we were allowing in, what we were agreeing with, and what was influencing our home.

And this is the part people don’t always want to talk about… this is spiritual.

Jesus said in John 10:10:

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy… I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.”

The enemy wants your home heavy. He wants tension. He wants distraction. He wants you worn down and disconnected.

He does not want peace in your house.

Not Everything Is Neutral

We had to realize that not everything in our life was neutral.

Some things were opening doors.
Some things were creating distance.
Some things were allowing heaviness in.

What you watch matters.
What you listen to matters.
What you dwell on matters.

Because you may not control every thought that comes in… but you absolutely control what you agree with.

The Power of Agreement

There is a moment with every thought.

You either agree with it—or you don’t.

And that moment matters more than you think.

Because agreement gives access.

Scripture says in 2 Corinthians 10:5:

“Take every thought captive to obey Christ.”

You don’t just let thoughts sit there. You don’t let them build a home in your mind.

You decide what stays.

Your Home Carries Something

Your home is not just a place you live.

It carries something.

An atmosphere.

And that atmosphere is shaped by what you allow, what you speak, what you dwell on, and what you invite in.

If God is not intentionally welcomed in, something else will start filling that space.

That’s just the reality.

You Can Shift It

If your home has felt heavy… off… tense…

You don’t have to stay there.

You can shift it.

Not overnight.
Not perfectly.
But intentionally.

Through what you speak.
Through what you allow.
Through what you invite in.

Little by little… things begin to change.
